In November, if you're of age, you should vote for Barack Obama. This post is mostly directed at Spencer who I think is still on the fence. I assume that Luke and Nate get it, and JJ for that matter, but he can't vote. Don't vote for a third party candidate. I voted for Nader in 2000 and it didn't turn out so good, or rather it blew up in our collected faces as the worst administration in American history snuck in through the back door and dragged our country into a quagmire of bloodshed, poverty, and pestilence.
I'm writing this for primarily selfish reasons because if McCain (who I once admired, but now can no longer recognize since he has mutated into some perverse caricature of his former self) wins in November, I'll probably become very despondent and start vandalizing homes of people with McCain/Palin signs in their stupid, ugly, ignorant yards. Then I'll get arrested and I won't be able to send you Christmas/birthday gifts from prison. That's right, I'm not above bribery.
Seriously, Spenny, voting for Obama will get you more ladies. Isn't that what it's all about? College chicks love a progressive, forward-thinking dude. Obama gives you all that and more. You can be a conservative d-bag when you're a retired old man.
I welcome any and all responses. For some reason I'm more anxious about the outcome of this election than anything I've encountered before ever and this blog seems to provide a cathartic effect.

I'm voting for Obama, but feel that no matter who wins the country is better off.
despite your attempt to persuade me in voting for obama, i am still on the fence. i agree with nate that either way we will be better off. I am however angry at all the die-hard Obama fans all over. I swear if they keep on pestering me with saying how much better obama is than McCaine, im going to end up voting for McCaine.
That's all well and good, but how do feel about McCain? Your inability to correctly spell the name of the candidate you are voting for proves to me that you, like most Republicans, are very uninformed and misguided. Do your brothers a favor, do the world a favor, and vote for Barack.
To speak to Nathan's point, how are we going to better off if the Republicans maintain control of the White House? In an increasingly globalized society we need a leader that can address the unique problems of the 21st century. Look what the Republicans have done: during the Clinton administration the economy was flourishing and the government coffers were overflowing with a surplus. Flash forward to today, the Dow Jones is in free fall and McCain says, "The fundamentals of the economy are sound" as Lehman Brothers (one of the oldest financial firms in the Nation) goes bankrupt. The Clinton surplus has been reversed to a staggering deficit. Frankly, the party that claims to represent fiscal responsibility doesn't know shit about the economy. They want to drill for more oil, never mind that it's essentially a 19th century fuel that causes all sorts of the well known problems.
A continuation of Republican policies would not leave this country better off. It would just allow the country to stagnate until we can no longer command any respect on the world stage. I'm not even going to go into foreign policy because y'all probably have better things to do than read my rambling diatribe.
If nothing else, vote Obama for Luke's sake. As you know he will be attending the inauguration. Do you want him to witness the coolest president ever being sworn in or do you want him to witness the final nail being pounded into the coffin of freedom and democracy?
Spencer,
each citizen only gets the opportunity to vote in a presidential election once every four years. To throw your vote away based on an aversive reaction to those trying to persuade you is as silly as that time nate got french fries with gravy and God knows what else when we were in Canada. I agree with you there is nothing more annoying than somebody trying to imprint their belief systems upon you, and most times when silly college students go about doing this they do not know the facts and just regurgitate whatever information they hear from either Fox news or MSNBC. Nothing annoys me more than people who badmouth Bush without merit. "Bush is such a bad president he should be impeached"
"why?"
"I don't know because he's a bad president"
"what makes him a bad president?"
"I don't know just the war .. just he sucks at his job"
I believe that nobody can criticize the work that Bush has done without having factual information to back it up besides just calling him a bad president because it's "the in thing to do" there is an arsenal of reasons one can dislike Bush so it pisses me off when people pretend to be all political yet have no idea what they are talking about.
I like you wasn't into politics and hated people trying to get me to act one way or another without reason.
Then I took a class on persuasion and realized all political campaigns are pretty much bull shit facts blown way out of proportion and out of context . and calling each other out for each one Using different strategies and tactics to sway the emotions of the people and distract attention from what qualities a president should have that makes him/her competent to hold the position.
is the fact that Sarah Palin has a down syndrome babya good indicator of how she will lead this country? - no, it means that one of her kid's chromosomes is messed up.
does the fact that obama is held in a celebrity status mean that he won't take the presidency seriously? probably not, what needs to be analyzed and held as important is how they will do the job of being president, (not of being a mother to a special needs child, or keeping up your good public image)
(also if you were being a critical observer you would question that last loaded statement by asking your self 'is he actually A celebrity'or does the mccain party want to label him with a negitive label, obama is no more a celebrity than mccain, if anybody is should be labeled with 'celebrity status' it should be Palin)she has been on the cover of more gossip magazines than both of the candidates, has more scandals and rumors following her, and has people liking her on appeals to pathos (emotion) as compared to logos (logic).,
The selection of Sarah Palin could be added to jim gaafagan's comedy bit about "how stupid do I think Americans are" ("Americans are so stupid I could sell them bottled water") Republican strategists in a Hail Mary last ditch effort thought what action to take that is so out of left field that we can win back votes. The answer "I think Americans are so stupid that if we pull a scandal saturated, governer w/ 18 months of experiance (mom has more experienced being an elected official that she does), semi good looking woman, that Americans will vote for her regardless of how poorly she will do after McCain suffers a heart attack two months into his term."
What is sad is that it is working, they don't care about her not knowing what a doctrine is, video of her admitting she doesn't know what the vice president does, several people within the mccain camp saying she couldn't handle running Hewlett-Packard. instead people are enamored by her because she is able to raise five kids (who are probably emotionally abused because of their stupid names) live in Alaska, field dress a moose, followed by scandal, and looks like Tina Fey.
so all in all the most important thing is to evaluate a candidate based solely on how they will perform in the office as compared to how they deal with trifling matters. If you are able to fairly evaluate both sides and McCain still comes up as a number one pick more power to you. do not simply vote one way because of an unrelated matter.
